It’s not uncommon for older landscaping to outgrow its original purpose. What once started as decorative shrubs can, over time, turn into dense, hardwood growth with thick bases and deep, spreading roots. These types of shrubs often become more like small trees, taking up valuable yard space and making it difficult for homeowners to maintain or improve their property.

This was exactly the case on a recent job involving the removal of four large hardwood shrubs that had completely taken over a section of the yard. The homeowner’s goal was simple: clear the area entirely and prepare it for new grass. However, because of the size and maturity of the shrubs, the job required more than basic trimming or cutting—it needed a full removal process from top to root.
The work began by carefully cutting down each shrub in sections. Due to their size and density, these weren’t shrubs that could simply be cut at the base and removed in one piece. Each one had to be broken down methodically to maintain control of the debris and protect the surrounding lawn. By working from the top down, the shrubs were reduced efficiently while keeping the work area organized and manageable.
Once the shrubs were fully cut down, all branches and brush were immediately processed through a woodchipper. This step helped keep the property clean throughout the job and eliminated the need for large piles of debris. Chipping on-site not only speeds up the process but also ensures that the area remains neat and accessible as the work progresses.
With the above-ground portion removed, the focus shifted to the stumps and root systems. Each stump was ground down approximately six inches below ground level, ensuring there would be no visible remnants left behind. This depth is important because it allows the area to be properly leveled and prevents future issues when applying topsoil or planting grass. In addition to the main stumps, running surface roots were also addressed, as these can interfere with grading and lead to uneven settling if left in place.
After the grinding was complete, the final step was leveling the area. The ground was smoothed and cleared of remaining debris, leaving a clean, even surface ready for topsoil and seed. This step is what truly completes the transformation, turning a previously overgrown and unusable section of yard into a space that can be immediately improved and enjoyed.

From start to finish, the entire job was completed in just three hours. What once felt like a permanent obstacle in the yard was quickly turned into a fresh, open area ready for new growth. Projects like this show that with the right approach, even heavily overgrown shrubs can be removed efficiently, leaving behind a clean foundation for whatever comes next.
